EV Project – completed June 2024
Details about our Electric Vehicle charging stations project.
NOTE: The deadline for application submission was Dec 11, 2023. Your application must include the P, L, P1, or L1 in front of the parking spot number.
We held an owners information session about the project on 27 Nov 2023. If you missed the meeting, you can watch a recording of the meeting. The passcode is K2PnY%MY
Key points about the project
- We have chosen MetroEV as our vendor. The have installed the EV infrastructure in over 160 condo buildings and approximately 3,000 Smart chargers.
- We plan to proceed with this project which will include: installing the base infrastructure for 30 chargers, and installing the chargers in phase 1. The timeframe for the project phase 1 to start is April or May 2024 and it will take 6-7 weeks to complete.
- The cost to install the base infrastructure to support 30 chargers is estimated to be $41700+HST. The condo corporation will pay this from our 2023/24 operating budget.
- If you commit to the project in phase 1, the cost to an owner to have a charger installed is $3150+HST plus the lawyer fee (approx. $450 all in) to register the charger on title via a signed agreement made between the owner and the corporation.
- If you do not commit to installing a charger in phase 1, the cost will increase to $3450+HST. The cost of registering the charger on title will likely be higher.
- The cost of charging will be set at a later date based on the current Ottawa Hydro charges for electricity and other services with an additional 25% to cover the maintenance and billing software costs.
- With help from MetroEV, we will be applying for grant money as part of the ZEVIP program when it reopens in April 2024, possibly sooner. This program will pay up to 50% of the total cost of the project. There is no guarantee that we will win this grant but the more chargers we commit to installing, the better our chances. If we are successful, we will split this bonus between the owners and the base infrastructure costs. We plan to proceed with the project even if we don’t receive the grant money.
- If you choose not to install a charger in phase 1 of the project, unfortunately you will not benefit from the bonus.

Future growth
If the demand for EV charger installations exceeds the capacity of the 30 chargers planned for Phase 1, the board will work with MetroEV to discuss the options, including grant application possibilities. The board may consider implementing a Phase 2 at a later date if there is enough of a commitment from owners.
LiteOn chargers
The anticipated life span of the LiteOn charger is 9 years of daily charging (6 hour a day). That equals to many more years based on an average 2 hours of charging/day.
The majority of the potential error or issues with the charger can and will be resolved through the software (no labour or material cost are involved). MetroEV will support The Gardens for this after the 3 year warranty. It is very rare that the hardware needs a repair or replacement. The most common issue is that someone drives over the charging cable and damages it.
